Voyaj Brooklyn: Gather Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy Fly Market

Gather Brooklyn

In the midst of Bed-Stuy’s hustle and bustle, individuals and businesses are looking for ways to link neighborhood and commerce in a meaningful way.

Enter DeeArah Wright. She is a Southern girl at heart, a Tennessean by birth and upbringing and she brings a sense of its history and warmth to the chaos that can be Brooklyn. Her vision: to bring together vendors under one umbrella each Sunday on Lewis Avenue to celebrate all of the wonderful possibilities that Brooklyn’s small businesses can offer in an age of luxury development and corporate takeovers. The result is Gather Brooklyn, which kicked off Sunday, August 8th and will continue through the fall.

When I arrived on the intersection between Lewis Avenue and Decatur Street, the melodic tunes of Afro-beat and the aroma of jerk chicken summoned me to a small network of tents. Underneath? Community artwork for children (and the child in all of us) and vendors selling clothing, reiki sessions, and delicious West Indian food.

When you are done shopping, feel free to go across the street to the delectable Bread Stuy. Make sure to have one of their delectable mango iced teas, if nothing else. There is also Peaches right next door, known for its innovative but accessible Southern cooking.

And just enjoy Bed-Stuy for what it is, a beautiful community of hard-working families, artists, entrepreneurs, and strivers all represented beautifully at a truly fun, fly market!
